In Amsterdam, the Keizersgracht (the Emperor’s canal) is one of the four canals forming the Grachtengordel (the Canal Ring) which has added to the Unesco World Heritage List in 2010. Those canals have been dug four centuries ago.
When it is cold enough, it is possible to skate on the canal. And when conditions allow it, the skating Keizersrace (the Emperor’s race) is organized and the winner is proclaimed the “Keizer van Amsterdam” (the Emperor of Amsterdam). The last races were held in 1991, 1996, 1997 and 2012.
